The small state of Sikkim has over 220 wetlands spread across its landscape. Most of these wetlands are fed by glaciers in the high mountains and some of them are rain fed. All these wetlands and their catchment area serve as habitats for many of the state’s important wildlife.  Wetlands, like Lake Tsomgo and Lake Gurudongmar also provide livelihood to countless number of people.  Most importantly wetlands take care also of our water requirements, like for Gangtok town water is supplied from a wetland situated above Tsomgo Lake. Wetlands also aid in recharge of ground water which is important for our springs, on which most of the rural population depend for their water needs.
Wetlands are the earth’s natural water infrastructure, providing a clean source and store of freshwater. Their loss and degradation directly intensifies water supply issues and compromises human well-being. Without the appropriate management of wetlands there is no water of the right quality and quantity, where and when it is needed.
This World Wetland Day let us value the services provided by our wetlands. Let us remember that managing water saves wetlands & water management starts at home!!

Do not waste water unnecessarily and install water saving devices. Harvest rain water wherever possible. Be informed and help spread the awareness.
